El Pibe, as was his nickname, led the Argentinian team to the 1986 World Cup title and was remembered as the best that this country ever produced. With him as the leader, the Argentinians reached the finals four years later, but this time they lost to West Germany.

His controversial personality couldn’t cast a shadow over fantastic and unreal football knowledge. Maradona started his career in Argentinos Juniors, where he played for five years before transferring to Boca Juniors in 1981. A year after, he went overseas to Barcelona, where he stayed for two years, heading to Napoli afterward and becoming the most expensive player in the world

He would turn the club upside down, making them one of Europe’s best, winning numerous trophies along with individual prizes. Napoli dethroned Juventus as the most popular and dominant team in Italy, defying a much wealthier and bigger organization from the north of the country.

During his time in Naples, Maradona became vulnerable to various vices. After leaving the club in 1992, he had short stints in Sevilla and Newels Old Boys before ending his career in Boca Juniors.

El Pibe was a mediocre coach, and his biggest success was taking Argentina to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where his side suffered elimination in the quarterfinals against Germany.
