Unlike preseason games during which the Lakers were better than their local rivals, things were different last night. In the first competitive contest of the year between the two sides, LAC beat the champions, 116-109, with Paul George putting on a clinic and ruining the rivals’ championship ring presentation.

The Clips’ forward had 33 points, dropping 26 of them in the second half. PG was demolishing his guards, whooting 13-for-18 from the field, most of these scores in one-on-one situations during the late third and fourth quarter. He added 6 boards and three assists with five threes as well.

The game saw both sides playing in waves, with the Clippers demolishing the purple and gold in the first period, 39-19, but slowing down in the second quarter, allowing the rivals to come back down to two points before halftime, 56-54.

LeBron James had a team-high for the champs, 22 points, with five boards and assists. Anthony Davis scored 18 points with 7 rebounds, while Dennis Schroder almost posted a triple-double with 14 points, 12 boards, and 8 assists.

Montrezl Harrell had 17 buckets and 10 boards off the bench, and Kyle Kuzma added 15. The Lakers meet Dallas on Friday, while the Clippers play in Denver against the Nuggets.

In the second game of the night, which opened the year, the Golden State Warriors suffered a nasty defeat against the Brooklyn Nets, 125-99.

The former Warrior and the two-time champion with them, Kevin Durant, played his first game since leaving Bay Area against the former team. KD dropped 22 points, confidently leading the Nets to a routine win that saw them controlling the match from the tip-off until the end.
