Two MLS teams appeared in the CONCACAF Champions League this Wednesday night, and both posted narrow wins. However, LAFC advanced to the semifinals, following their win over Cruz Azul, 2-1, while Atlanta ended its competition, defeating Club America, 2-1.

The game at Exploria Stadium, which was the home of LAFC in this matchup, ended with the American side coming back from the deficit to earn a very significant win. Unlike other quarterfinal pairs, this one had just one leg due to the interrupted competition several months ago.

According to the bookmakers, Bob Bradley’s side would manage to beat the Mexicans, who were slight favorites. Yoshimar Yotun opened the show, with a goal from the penalty kick after just 15 minutes.

Carlos Vela responded from the same situation, and the Mexican superstar hit the back of the net in the 38th minute, also from the penalty.

The intense second half didn’t see a goal up to the 71st minute. A teenage substitution, Kwadwo Opoku reacted the best following one corner, with the ball coming his way. He had no troubles to take a ferocious shot and beat the guests’ goalkeeper.

The next opponent for the LA team will be Club America, who eliminated Atlanta United despite losing last night’s clash. That match is this Saturday, at Azteka Stadium in the Mexican capital.

Club America suffered a minimal defeat at Exploria, where both matches took place, 1-0, but they had a 3-0 advantage from the first leg, which allowed them to advance to the final four of the elite CONCACAF competition.

The match itself was very dull, with the guests defending throughout the entire time, allowing the home team to have the ball and dictate the tempo, but cleverly protecting its net. Club America had just one shot on target, while on the other side, hosts posted seven. We need to point out that America’s goalkeeper, Guillermo Ochoa, had several excellent reactions, spearing his team from additional troubles.

He couldn’t do anything in the 82nd minute, but it was already late at that point for anything more. Jackson Conway’s header beat Ochoa, giving Atlanta a 1-0, which happened to be the final result.

The other two MLS teams, New York City FC and Montreal Impact, ended their adventure in the Champions League as well. NYCFC lost to UNAL Tigres 4-0 in the rematch, 5-0 on aggregate, while Montreal Impact defeated Olimpia from Honduras, 0-1 in the second leg, but suffered an elimination because of an away goal, 2-2 on aggregate.
