Daniil Medvedev will try to dethrone Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open finals, following his dominant win over Stefanos Tsitsipas earlier today. The Russian player defeated the Greek in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, 7-5.

He needed two hours and nine minutes of play to reach the finals, after a very confident performance, with slight turbulences in the third set.

Medvedev had a fantastic 88% of the first serve, which was his strongest weapon against Tsitsipas, who had no solution on how to defend from the missiles coming from the other side of the net. Though, we need to say that the Greek player was visibly tired from the marathon match against Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals once he managed to come back from being down, 0-2, and win the clash.

Of course, Medvedev was trying to exploit that as much as possible, imposing a high-intensity tempo early on and dictating the rhythm through points.

He would smash Tsitsipas in the first two sets, not allowing the rival to have the slightest hopes for making any kind of resistance, especially the serve.

The third sequence saw the Russian slowing down slightly following one break point he won at the start of the same. Many believed that Tsitsipas has a chance to make some miraculous comeback once again, but Medvedev prevented him.

The Russian saved one breakpoint at 3-4, killing the Greek’s morale, who was desperately trying to keep himself in this event. After that, with both guys leveled at 5-all, he was perfect while breaking Tsitsipas’ serve and routinely closed this match.

This was Medvedev’s 20th win in a row, as he showed an impressive form over the past few months. On his way up to the finals, the only time he had some troubles was in the second round. Filip Krajinovic would come back from 0-2 to 2-2, but was demolished in the fifth set, not winning a single game.

One more Serb will be on Medvedev’s way towards the title – Novak Djokovic. The Joker eliminated Aslan Karatsev in the second semis yesterday, reaching his ninth title match here. He would win the previous eight, becoming the absolute recorder here in Melbourne. So pretty much, Medvedev will have the toughest possible job on Sunday.

What precedes that event is the ladies’ finals in which Naomi Osaka meets Jennifer Brady, this Saturday.
