That earned Poirier a doctor’s stoppage win and an edge in these two’s trilogy cases, but it definitely left a bitter taste in everyone’s mouth. The fight was only becoming more intensified, but it had to be stopped due to the Irishman’s gruesome injury.
Up until that point, we’ve seen a very good battle, where Conor started much faster but faded as time went by. After several leg kicks, the two would find themselves on the mat, where Poirier escaped a guillotine, and after that punished McGregor severely with ground and pound hits.

The Notorious fired several upkicks, which did slow down his rival, and once the two finally got up to their feet, McGregor would break his ankle while trying to punch Poirier. His left leg was behind, and while rotating his whole body while extending, McGregor extensively twitched the ankle, which would later lead to serious damage.
Once the doctors witnessed the situation, they would immediately stop the fight, and McGregor stayed sitting on the ground even during the official announcement.
For him, this was the third loss in the past four matches, all starting against Khabib Nurmagomedov at the infamous UFC 229. His comeback out of retirement against Donald Cerrone at the UFC 246 was the brightest spot for the Notorious in the past two years. After that came two defeats against Poirier, tonight’s and the one from UFC 257, when Diamond KOd McGregor in the second round.
Poirier successfully recovered after his loss to Khabib at the UFC 242. His first victory was against Dan Hooker in June 2020, via unanimous decision, and after that, two more triumphs vs. McGregor.
According to the sources from inside the UFC, Poirier should have a chance to attack the title once again. Apparently, the winner of this contest was supposed to meet the current UFC lightweight champion, the Brazilian, Charles Oliveira, who won the belt against Michael Chandler.
The same sources are suggesting that the battle should happen until the end of this year.
