According to several prominent NFL insiders, and the player himself, Cam Newton should join the New England Patriots in the next few days.
The 31-year old quarterback who was recently released from the Carolina Panthers where he spent the previous nine seasons, will apparently join the Pats and try to replace the six-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady.
Adam Schefter and many others revealed the news NFL insiders, and Newton himself added more fuel to the fire when he shared a status on his Instagram account, which included the phrase “Let’s go Pats,” in the end.
The rumors regarding his future have been circulating the league ever since he got released from the Panthers and the Patriots were in the middle of them all the time.
Reportedly, Newton and the team fro Foxborough are about to sign a one-year incentive-laden deal. It means that his earnings are going to depend upon his and the team’s performance and the results.
Pats’ were looking for a player who might replace Tom Brady who left for Tampa Bay, and as time went by, Newton’s chances for landing at the Gillette Stadium were getting bigger and bigger. Patriots didn’t have enough money in the salary cap to chase some of the free agents, and with Newton’s late release from the Panthers, the situation turned out to be perfect for them.
Even though New England lost its best player, the team is still very strong, and many believe that with Newton completely healthy, Bill Belichick’s crew could attack the Super Bowl once again.
Pats were 25-1 to win the Super Bowl, but after this news appeared, those numbers fell to 20-1, without even seeing the deal finalized.
Newton is one of the best quarterbacks of his generation. He was drafted No.1 in the 2011 NFL draft and immediately established himself as one of the best QBs in the league. He would win the NFL Rookie of the Year award, becoming the first player who threw over 4,000 in his rookie season.
After that, he went on to become a three-time Pro Bowl player, and an NFL MVP in 2015, once his Panthers reached the Super Bowl, but lost against the Denver Broncos. After suffering a couple of injuries in the last few years, and missing 14 games in the previous campaign, Carolina decided to release him.
