Curtis Blaydes defeated Alexander Volkov this Saturday night, posting another big triumph on his path towards the UFC heavyweight throne. After five hard rounds, he would win via unanimous decision in which he mostly controlled the situation with wrestling the rival.
Throughout the opening three rounds, Blaydes was keeping the Russian on the floor all the time. He would concentrate all of his power on wrestling, and eventually record 14 takedowns, the highest in the UFC history.
The Razor didn’t land any powerful strikes, and that was something that could easily come back at him like a boomerang. During the fourth, he lost the energy, and Volkov used that to hurt him pretty solid. Blaydes was breathing heavily and was bleeding from his lip.
With the last atoms of his power, he managed to neutralize Volkov in the fifth round and secure himself a fourth straight victory, which definitely puts him in line for the title match in the future.
Blaydes spoke about that after the fight, also adding several remarks to the UFC organization, with some of them infuriating Dana White, who was pretty angry after hearing all of them.
The UFC president stated that Blaydes should concentrate more on fighting, and that he needs to realize that he lost against Francis Ngannou twice, which is why the Predator has an advantage on the rankings and when it comes to booking a title-fight.
Also, Ngannou knocked out cold Jairzinho Rozenstruik recently, only to confirm that he is still the most serious title candidate in the UFC heavyweight division.
However, there is a fight between Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier first, and that one has to pass before making and organizing any other battles. White clearly suggested to Blaydes that he doesn’t have to wait for the match for the belt, but instead start looking for another opponent.
In other fights, Josh Emmet defeated Shane Burgos in the featherweight division, Raquel Pennington beat Marion Reneau in women’s bantamweight, Belal Muhammad beat Lyman Good, in welterweight. All these fights ended with a unanimous decision.
And finally, Jim Miller won via submission against Roosevelt Roberts in the opening fight of the main card.
