After defeating their respective rivals tonight, Bayern Munich and Barcelona proceeded to the quarterfinals of the Champions League.
Bayern Rolls Over Chelsea
The Bavarians trashed the guests from London with 4-1 and concluded this matchup with an aggregate score of 7-1. German champs were a far better side in both matches, and even though they haven’t played a competitive contest for more than a month, Hansi Flick’s boys were far superior when compared to Chelsea.
Even if there was some tiny hope for the Blues, that there could be some surprise, Bayern’s players blew that out in the opening 25 minutes. Robert Lewandowski scored the opener in the 10th minute, from a penalty.
The Polish striker made an assist in the 24th, to Ivan Perisic, who doubled the lead. Callum Hudson-Odoi netted four minutes later, but his goal was disallowed after a VAR check. Yet, Lampard’s team managed to decrease the gap through Tammy Abraham one minute before the end of the first 45 minutes.
Bayern closed the show in the last 14 minutes, with Corentin Tolisso and Lewandowski adding a goal each, to put an end on tonight’s matchup and cruise into the top 8 of the UCL.
Barcelona Solves Everything in the First Half
Blaugrana showed its true face against Napoli in the first half. They scored three goals, allowing one, to win 3-1, and to send the Italians back home, ending their campaign. The aggregate score was 4-2.
It needs to be said that the opening goal of the hosts, came after one controversial situation. Lenglet scored, but it appears that Suarez might have committed a foul before the French’s goal. Later on, Messi scored to raise the lead to 2-0, and both goals came in the same minuets as the ones in Munich.
Another one of the Argentinian was canceled, shortly after, but he managed to force a penalty after one of Napoli’s players brought him down in the box. Suarez was the scorer in the 45th minute.
Napoli responded four minutes into the stoppage time, with Insigne using a penalty to make things a bit interesting. Still, there was no additional excitement, as hosts routinely slowed down the pace of the game, and prevented Napoli’s attacks, securing themselves a place in the next stage.
Bayern and Barcelona are clashing in six days, in the quarterfinals, at Estadio La Luz in Lisboa.
