Alabama Crimson Tide‘s DeVonta Smith, won the Heisman Trophy this Tuesday night, becoming the first wide receiver to do so since 1991.

Smiths, 22, finished ahead of Clemson‘s Trevor Lawrence, his teammate Mac Jones and Florida’s Kyle Trask, all three being quarterbacks. He had 1,856 points, and 447 first places, more than double than Trevor Lawrence had 222 and 1,187 points. Jones collected 138 first places and Trask 61.

Smith had a fantastic season so far, having caught 1,641 receiving yards, and 20 TD receptions. He also has 105 catches and leads the FBS in all three categories. Along with this, the WR added one returning and rushing TD each, dropping just two passes throughout the entire campaign.

All this earned Smith the AP Player of the Year honors last week, which was the first time one receiver got this award. As for the Heisman Trophy, Desmond Howard was the last WR to win it, 29 years ago, during his stint with the Michigan Wolverines.

His Roll Tide will play in the CFP finals against Ohio next Monday, and that will be the third time for the new Heisman Trophy winner to participate in a championship match. He currently has one win and one loss, with the note that in 2018, Smith solved the game with a touchdown catch in overtime against Georgia.

That was the first time he reached in the middle of media attention, and everyone assumed that Smith might become Roll Tide’s primary weapon in the next year. However, his stats didn’t progress that much due to the fierce competition, which included Henry Ruggs III, Jerry Jeudy, and Jaylen Waddle.

This year was all his, especially following Waddle’s nasty injury in October that forced him to miss the entire season. Smith posted stunning performances afterward, having six games with 150+ receiving yards and eight multiple TD contests.

In the Rose Bowl against Notre Dame, senior WR had 130 yards in seven catches for three TDs, and in the SEC Championship game, 184 receiving yards and two scores.

Smith is not expected to be among the top two choices at the upcoming draft, as both Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets need quarterbacks. But he can easily go to Miami Dolphins, who hold the rights for No.3 or Cincinnati Bengals at No.5. Both these sides have young quarterbacks, and adding a talented WR could form a long-term duo. Also, don’t forget that Tua Tagivailoa played with Smith at Alabama.
