A significant transaction will be made by the San Francisco 49ers before the trade deadline on November 1 in the National Football League.

According to an announcement by both teams on Thursday evening, the Carolina Panthers will send star running back Christian McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a player to be named later.

In return for McCaffrey, the Panthers will receive picks in the second, third, and fourth rounds of the 2023 draft, in addition to a fifth-round selection in the 2024 draft.

After beginning his professional career in Carolina and playing there for the first five and a half seasons, McCaffrey moved back to the Bay Area after being selected eighth overall in the 2017 NFL draft out of Stanford. In 2019, he was chosen for the All-Pro Team and the Pro Bowl due to his scrimmage yardage total of 2,392, which ranked third all-time in NFL history.

This year, the dual-threat running back, who has struggled with injuries in the previous two seasons, has run for 393 yards at an average of 4.6 yards per carrying and 277 catching yards.

What the 49ers might expect as a result of this trade

When healthy, Kyle Shanahan’s offense will have access to another lethal weapon in this position. This is the most critical aspect of the deal for San Francisco. With a healthy McCaffrey providing the kind of production we expect, the 49ers would be heavy favorites to repeat their postseason heroics from a year ago.

Doing so will mean advancing through the NFC championship game and playing in the Super Bowl for the second time in the last four years. The change shifts the equilibrium in the National Football Conference (NFC), as the Philadelphia Eagles are currently unbeaten while other teams, such as the Los Angeles Rams (the defending champion), the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (the 2020 champion), and the Green Bay Packers are currently struggling.
