Chelsea defeated Manchester City tonight, allowing Liverpool to win the Premiership title after 30 years of waiting. The Blues were better throughout the entire game, eventually earning a 2-1 victory, which ignited a massive celebration among the Reds fans.
City had to win this one in order to keep the theoretical chance to defend the trophy. Still, even if they did that, the possibilities of them reaching Liverpool practically wouldn’t exist. Klopp’s side had a massive advantage, and there was no way for them to lose all the matches until the end.
As for the match itself, the hosts were waiting for their chances to strike from the counter-attack, allowing the Sky-Blues to have more of the ball possession. The first half saw several solid opportunities on both sides, but the first team to score was Chelsea. The American international scored the goal in the 36th minute, after Mendy’s and Gundogan’s mistake. He would storm down towards the box, rushed in and beat Ederson.
But City replied following the halftime break. Ten minutes after the kick-off, Kevin de Bruyne showed his class once more. The Belgian player executed a free-kick to level the sore and minutes later set up a perfect opportunity for Sterling who hit the post, wasting an ideal chance to stun the hosts and to change the course of the match.
The game, and therefore the title chase, was determined in the 77th minute, when Fernandinho handballed on the goal line preventing the ball from entering the net. The Brazilian received a red card, and Chelsea was awarded a penalty, which was executed by Willian.
Until the end of the game, there wasn’t anything special, with the Blues keeping the lead and handing the Reds their long-awaited title.
They now have 86 points, 23 more than City with seven rounds to go. Meanwhile, Chelsea is still fourth with 54 points, one fewer than Leicester but five more than Manchester United and Wolverhampton, who are also chasing the Champions League spot.
The celebration in Liverpool already started after the final whistle, and no doubt it will last long into the night.
