In the first leg of the Champions League round of 16, Real Madrid managed to defeat Ajax Amsterdam 1-2, after a lot of controversies.
The reigning Europan champions got the triumph at Amsterdam Arena mostly because of the official Damir Skomina. The Slovenian disallowed Ajax’s goal in the finish of the first half, after consulting the VAR technology.
His decision was controversial because the real reason for the goal cancelation wasn’t clear. According to some experts, it was because Dusan Tadic stayed in offside after Nicolas Tagliafico’s header, but others are saying that the Serbian international made an apparent foul on Curtois.
Not even the Real players are protesting this goal. @AFCAjax got robbed. With many of these referee decisions you would think the UEFA really needs RMA to progress. #AJARMA ❌❌❌ pic.twitter.com/axX6hnOKuz

What raises suspicion is Curtois’ behavior. The Belgian goalkeeper didn’t indicate that Tadic made a foul on him, and there were no reactions about that after the ball went into the goal.
When talking about the potential offside, Tadic didn’t touch the ball or had any influence on the path of the same, which makes Skomina’s decision even more questionable.
Regarding the game, Ajax was better throughout most of the time, and they set the tempo and the pace on the field. The home team had better chances, but Courtois was excellent today, and he is the main reason why Lancers didn’t take the lead first.
On several occasions, he saved the skin of the reigning champs.
Los Blancos used one fast break and seized the advantage in the 60th minute. Vinicius Junior made chaos on his side passing several players, before assisting to Karim Benzema, who didn’t have any troubles to beat Onana.

Fifteen minutes after that, Ziyech equalized bringing back the hope that hosts still have some chances of winning this event. They decided to go for the whole prey, and began attacking with full power, which in the end allowed Real to make another counter-attack and seal this match. Asensio scored after Carvajal’s assist, putting an end on this drama in Amsterdam
In the second game of the night, Tottenham demolished Borussia Dortmund, with all three goals in the second half. The scorers were Son, Vertonghen, and Llorente, and the Spurs gained a 3-0 lead before the second leg. The guests from Dortmund had more chances in the first half, and after not using any of them, they were stunned in the second 45 minutes.
The rematches are scheduled for the 5th of March.
