The Hardy Boyz are arguably one of the best tag teams in WWE history so fans were both surprised and excited when they returned to the company at Wrestlemania 33 in 2017. Despite all their success and holding titles across various promotions, one championship they have never held was the SmackDown tag team titles.
That was until last night.
The duo was booked against reigning champions The Usos for the titles. Jimmy and Jey were fresh off a successful title defence at Wrestlemania 35 and it was announced early in the program that they would be facing the Hardys.
The Usos motivation was to not only prove they were the best team of brothers in the company but also one of the best tag teams of all time.
The four men put on a fantastic match with both sides using their high flying tactics to try and gain an advantage over their opponent. In the end the Hardys outlasted the Uso brothers to capture the belts and become eight time tag team champions.
While celebrating, the two were interrupted by Lars Sullivan, who had debuted the previous night on Raw attacking Kurt Angle in the ring. Jeff and Matt would attempt to subdue the massive wrestler but would find themselves both laying on the canvas and on the receiving end of a flying headbutt off the top rope.
Sullivan is being built as an indestructible heel character with these quick attacks but it doesn’t appear the WWE has a particular opponent in mind for him. Sullivan was originally rumored to be facing John Cena at this year’s Wrestlemania but would take some time away from the ring due to mental health issues including anxiety attacks.
He seems to have gotten past whatever delayed his debut and looked quite strong in his first two appearances inside a WWE ring.
SmackDown was a night of sneak attacks with the audience witnessing Randy Orton, Kevin Owens Lacey Evans, Samoa Joe and Braun Strowman all making an appearance attacking fellow wrestlers in the ring. The announcers played up the “Superstar Shake-Up” angle stating that superstars on both rosters were looking to make an impression before next week’s Montreal show.
