It wasn’t the debut that Sage Northcutt was hoping for.

The young MMA fighter debuted earlier today for ONE Championship in their Enter The Dragon event in Kallang, Singapore. The former UFC prospect and fighter joined the company and was highly touted as being a name that the new fighting promotion could help build an organization around.

Nortcutt was matched up against Cosmo Alexandre, a 37-year-old Brazilian with a 7-1 record in mixed martial arts and a 69-19 kickboxing record. As it turns out he also sports a wicked right hand.

Alexandre knocked Northcutt out with a right hook that sent the young fighter to the canvass. Alexandre took another swing but missed as his opponent was headed to the mat. The referee stopped the fight before the Brazilian could deliver a hammer fist to his fallen opponent.

Northcutt’s debut lasted just 29 seconds and is the first knockout loss of his career. His record drops to 11-3 and snaps a three-fight winning streak he had to close out his UFC career.

To be fair many were critical of the match-up as Alexandre is a highly experienced combat sports fighter with tons of professional fights under his belt. He has knocked out opponents 21 times as a kickboxer and 5 times in MMA contests. Alexandre has also won several tournaments and titles in the sport of kickboxing.

Northcutt allowed him to get in close allowing his opponent to deliver the punch perfectly. It outlined perfectly that the young fighter still has a lot to learn in the ring.

While it may be a setback for his career with ONE Championship, it is only a temporary one. At only 23-years-old, Northcutt has plenty of time to train, improve and exert his will on opponents in the coming years.

Dana White obviously saw a lot in him, signing him after seeing him in the Looking For A Fight reality series. Northcutt had amassed a 5-0 record by that time fighting for Legacy FC. He debuted for the UFC in October 2015.

White was heavily criticized for letting Northcutt go as he clearly had talent, was very charismatic and was predicted to be a top name in the sport for years to come. When White revealed the UFC had parted ways with the fighter, he was quoted as saying “Sage needs some work.”

The first round knockout loss proves the UFC President correct.

The fight was also Alexandre’s debut with ONE Championship but after the quick knockout, expect to see more of this veteran fighter in the promotion.
