No.1 seeds in both men’s and women’s singles competition were eliminated from the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC last night.

Rafael Nadal suffered a big-time loss last night to Nik Kyrgios in his first appearance after Australian Open finals, while Sloan Stephens was stunned by Beatriz Haddad Maia, a qualifier.

Nadal had three match points against the hot-tempered Australian, who managed to squeeze out from a tough situation in the last set.

The match itself was fun to watch because it had a lot of ups and downs on both sides, and an exhilarating ending, which would be more suitable for some Grand Slam finals. In the end, it was 2-1 for Kyrgios, who won both of his sets after tiebreaks, 3-6, 7-6(2), 7-6(6).

What especially drew the attention of the tennis fans, was Nadal’s statement after the match, in which he praised Kyrgios, but added that he “lacks respect towards the crowd, opponents and himself.”

Nadal was furious at the end of the match, and he went straight towards the locker room.

The Australian will play against Stan Wawrinka in the quarterfinals. The Swiss player eliminated Steve Johnson, 7-6(5), 6-4.

Earlier yesterday Frances Tiafoe lost against Mackenzie McDonald in the US derby 7-6(7), 5-7, 3-6.

John Isner defeated Sam Querrey in the battle of veterans 6-4, 6-4. McDonald plays against Cameron Noire, while Isner faces John Millman in the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, Sloan Stephens suffered one massive shock. The former US champion lost to a 144th player in the world, the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-3, 6-3. This is her first win over one top 10 players and the first quarterfinals after year and a half. The American player is far away from the desired form, and with Indian Wells closing on, she hasn’t got too much time to improve it.

Hadad Maia has Yafan Wang as her next opponent, already today.

On the other hand, Victoria Azarenka is playing excellent, and the former No.1 smashed her way into the quarterfinals by defeating Tatjana Maria, leaving only three games to her opponent, 6-2, 6-1.
