The NCAA men’s basketball season has come down to one game. The Texas Tech Red Raiders and Virginia Cavaliers will duke it out for the national championship later tonight.

The Red Raiders are the Cinderella story of this season. Texas Tech were not even ranked nationally entering the season. It took two weeks of regular season time for the Red Raiders to be nationally ranked. Even then, the Red Raiders weren’t on anyone’s radar.

Despite winning many games, the Red Raiders didn’t exactly light the world on fire. They were dumped by Duke and Kansas. However, they did manage to put up a victory against Oklahoma and they later beat Kansas as well.

They were making noise but weren’t necessarily a threat to win it all. Then, on February 4, the Red Raiders went on an impressive run. To end the regular season, Texas Tech went on a nine-game win streak, which included wins against Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas.

In the national tournament, the Red Raiders have proven their worth against tough opponents. On their road to the championship, Texas Tech picked up wins against Michigan, Gonzaga and Michigan State. It’s safe to say after their NCAA tournament run, they deserve to be in the championship.

Texas Tech’s defense have been on point in the tournament. In all five of their tournament games, the Red Raiders have not allowed more than 70 points in a game.

As for the Virginia Cavaliers, they hope to get the monkey off their backs. After being eliminated in the first round last year, the team has much to prove. They have been one of the more consistent teams in the regular season over the last few years, but have not been able to capture the national championship.

Virginia are looking for their first national title in school history. Over the past 5 seasons, the Cavaliers have been the number one seed three times – and they were unsuccessful on all three attempts. They were the first team to be knocked out as a number one seed to a sixteen seed, however.

A loss to either program will be heartbreaking. The Red Raiders’ impeccable run would be storybook if they capture the title. Virginia are finally able to etch their name in the history books, they just need one more victory.
