The Florida State Seminoles couldn’t make another surprise and win the ACC tournament last night. The No.12 lost in the finals against No.5 Duke, even though they were ahead in the first half.
The final result 73-63 for the Blue Devils, who also gave the tournament MVP. And that was who other than Zion Williamson, the guy who dominated in the past few days, averaging 27 points and 10 boards per game.
The first half was tight, and it ended with a tie 36-36. Duke was slightly ahead in the first 10 minutes, but the Seminoles managed to make a 12-4 run, which pulled them away to +8, 27-19.
Blue Devils then held their rivals scoreless for 3:40 and caught up with the result, eventually making it even at the halftime.
But as soon as the second period started, Duke shifted into a higher gear, forcing the Seminoles to have several more scoreless runs which lasted for a few minutes.
In no time Krzyzewski’s boys made an 18-5 burst and created a 14-point lead, 58-44, which was, in fact, the end of the game.
Florida State had one late push, after which the Seminoles came down to only five points, 63-58, but then came another period in which Duke played excellent defense and didn’t allow a basket in almost four minutes.
During that time, the Blue Devils scored 9 unanswered points and clinched another ACC tournament title.
The tournament MVP Williamson had 21 points, along with 5 boards, shooting 7 of 11 from the field.
Tre Jones added 18 with 6 dimes, while RJ Barrett scored 17 with 9 rebounds. Cam Reddish finished the match with only 6 points.
For the Seminoles, Mfiondu Kabengele had a team-high 14 buckets, and it was off the bench, while Terrance Man had 12 with 8 rebounds.
Duke was awful behind the three-point line, shooting 2 of 14, but Florida State was similar from the field overall, 20 of 63.
This was Mike Krzyzewski’s 15th ACC tournament title.
His Blue Devils might become the No.1 seed before the NCAA tournament begins. With Zion healthy, they are automatically growing to be the biggest favorite for winning the championship.
The Seminoles are hoping to make another similar run as during the previous season. Back then this school reached the Final Four and made a big noise.
