A last-second missed layup was the difference maker in a game between the Duke Blue Devils and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. With Duke up by one with a second left, Wake Forest were unable to get the final scoring touch that would have put them ahead and sealed the victory.

David and Goliath is one of multiple ways to describe the game happening tonight. Wake Forest were expected to be smashed by Duke, even without Zion Williamson in the lineup. Entering tonight, Wake Forest wasn’t even a blip on the radar for the Blue Devils. The Demon Deacons were far down the standings of the ACC. Still, Wake Forest balled out in this game.

In their second last game of the season, Wake Forest were looking for one of the biggest upsets this season.

At the end of the first half, Wake Forest were pressing Duke, making this a must-see contest entering the second and final half of the ball game. Duke would lead at the half with a 35-34 advantage. RJ Barrett was the leading scorer for Duke, dropping 15 in the quarter. He was 6 for 11 in the half as well.

It was a team effort by Wake Forest to stay within reach in the first half. Chaundee Brown dropped 9 points in the opening frame. Meanwhile, Jaylen Hoard put up 8 in the opening half. They were well on their way to surpassing their average point total per game.

The second half saw Jaylen Hoard’s production stop. He managed 0 points in the second frame, going 0 for 4 from field goal range. Brown continued to have a big game, scoring 12 in the second half. He would finish the game with 21 on the night. Brandon Childress got into the action as well, scoring 17 of his 19 points in the second half. The Demon Deacon’s leading scorer was missed in the first half.

Barrett continued the pressure, adding 13 points in the frame to give Duke the edge. As mentioned, with time ticking down, Brown missed the layup which would have given Wake Forest the victory.

The ball was rebounded by Duke and the Blue Devils breathed a huge sigh of relief.

Duke turns their attention to UNC for the final game of the regular season, while Wake Forest will battle it out against Florida State.
